Spot UV Varnish

What is Spot UV?

Spot UV, also known as UV printing, spot varnish, and spot gloss, is a clear varnish used to enhance specific areas by creating a contrast between a dull matte and a shiny gloss. It’s often applied as gloss on a matte background but can also be applied as matte on a gloss background. The use of gloss spot UV adds vibrancy and a glossy 3D effect to colors.

Blind Spot UV

For a more subtle effect, use blind spot UV. This technique applies the UV varnish to a plain background with no print underneath. At first, the item may seem ordinary, but when picked up, your logo or text will appear and disappear as the item is tilted, creating a mesmerizing effect. Blind spot UV is also effective when applied over text. To enhance the wow factor, use gloss spot UV on top of a matte lamination. Soft touch or velvet lamination will give your item a luxurious look and feel. However, it’s not recommended to apply spot UV on unlaminated paper as it can be absorbed, diminishing the high-gloss effect.

How is spot UV applied

The printing and lamination process is followed by the application of the polymer, a clear and durable liquid, using a machine and a template. The sheet is then dried instantly under infrared and UV lamps, which is the source of the term “spot UV.

Setting up artwork

Artwork is supplied in the usual way with the spot UV area supplied as a separate file. This file should contain only the UV area and nothing else.

  1. Create an extra layer in your design tab and entitle it spot UV.
  2. Select a clashing colour, e.g. 100% magenta and save it as spot UV.
  3. In the first layers of your file copy the areas which will have spot UV and paste this on your new Spot UV layer in exactly the same position.
  4. The spot UV layer should now be coloured magenta.

Select the Spot UV areas carefully.

Spot UV is intended to create a contrasting effect and highlight specific areas, so it’s best to limit its application. A common use for document corners is adding UV to the printed logo. To add interest to a plain back, blind UV with text or a pattern can also be applied.

Think about the finishing process of your item.

It’s recommended to keep a minimum distance of 3mm between the spot UV and folds or trimmed areas, as the varnish requires a consistent surface tension and can crack or flake if placed too close.
